Libido, wife

What if my Wife Doesn’t have a Libido?

Both men and women can experience a lack of sexual desire at some point in their lives. For women, many factors can contribute to a decrease in libido, including stress, body image, and hormonal imbalances.

The most common cause of decreased libido in women is hormonal imbalances. Hormones in the female body are ever-changing. Fluctuations in hormone regulation can occur during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. As women age, however, these hormonal changes can cause an imbalance within the body, changing how a woman feels about sexual activity. If your wife is experiencing decreased libido, she may want to consider speaking with her doctor about having her hormone levels evaluated.

Hormones Responsible for Sexual Desire in Women

Cortisol

Cortisol is a stress hormone found in both men and women. During periods of stress, cortisol levels in the body increase, which can lead to a decrease in libido. Other symptoms of increased cortisol levels include craving more sugar or carbohydrates than usual, feeling overrun or overwhelmed, sleep disturbances, abdominal weight gain, and skin breakouts. Stress reduction and self-care measures can reduce cortisol levels in the body.

Estrogen

The primary female sex hormone is estrogen. Women tend to feel more like themselves when estrogen levels are well balanced. Estrogen is responsible for period regulation, sex drive, and the prominent female characteristics of breast development and clear skin. Women often experience bloating, mood changes, weight gain, irregular periods, vaginal dryness, and a decreased sex drive when estrogen levels become imbalanced.

Testosterone

Testosterone is not only found in men but also women. Testosterone helps to regulate bone health, breast health, menstrual health, vaginal health, and fertility. When testosterone levels become out of the normal range in women, a decrease in sexual desire can occur. When testosterone levels become abnormal, women may experience acne, anxiety and depression, facial hair, fatigue, and irregular periods.

Thyroid Hormone

The thyroid is a gland found in the neck that is responsible for the regulation of many different bodily functions. When the thyroid is not functioning correctly and is not secreting enough hormones, women may experience a decrease in their libido. This condition is called hypothyroidism. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism include depression, mood swings, hair loss, constipation, weight gain, fatigue, and headaches.

Hormone Replacement

Every woman deserves to experience a healthy sex life. Perimenopausal and menopausal women can experience significant hormonal imbalances that can contribute to a decrease in sexual desire and pleasure. Hormone replacement has improved many women’s sex life and overall well-being.
