Obesity and Low Testosterone

Low testosterone, also known as “low T” is one of the most talked about, and often misunderstood health conditions to impact men today. While there is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding low T, one of the many things experts have discovered about this condition is its link to obesity.

Health experts already know that obesity can lead to a number of significant health issues, and now, more specifically, they are finding a link to low T. In fact, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity are all linked to low testosterone.

While this doesn’t mean that replacing testosterone will fix these conditions, understanding their link is important to maintain better overall health. Let’s take a look!

Low T and Obesity

Testosterone is a very complicated hormone and helps with a number of different systems and functions within the body. So, why do experts believe that low T and obesity are linked?

Obese men are more likely to have low testosterone. According to studies, men with very low testosterone are also more likely to become obese. This is because fat cells metabolize testosterone to estrogen, which can ultimately lower testosterone levels.

Obesity is also responsible for reducing the levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, or SHGB. This is an important protein that carries testosterone into the blood. Less SHBG in the body means less free testosterone.

Research into the topic has also found that losing weight through exercise can actually increase testosterone levels—so if you are worried about weight and low T, starting to work out can be a great way to improve your overall health.

Other Side Effects of Low T

Many men don’t come to the conclusion that their weight or health issues may be associated with low testosterone. Other symptoms of low T to be on the lookout for include:

– Increased body fat

– Low sex drive

– Loss of body hair

– Less lean muscle mass

– Fatigue

– Depression symptoms

– Unexplained weight gain

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then you may have an issue with low T and should visit a medical professional for further diagnosis.

Does Low T Mean Poor Health in Men?

While there is a link between low testosterone and certain medical conditions, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a man with low T is unhealthy. The good news is, low testosterone can be fixed with the right treatment plan.

Testosterone treatments including creams, injections, and pellets can all help normalize your testosterone levels, help you maintain a healthier weight, and help keep other unwanted low T side effects at bay.
