Low Testosterone and Cholesterol: Is There a Connection?

There are many men today who are struggling with high cholesterol. This is an unfortunately common condition that can increase your risk for serious health conditions such as heart attack, stroke and heart disease.

There are a number of different factors that can contribute to high cholesterol, and many men may be surprised to find that low testosterone, or low T, is one of them. In fact, there is research to suggest that as testosterone increases, cholesterol decreases and low testosterone can actually contribute to cardiovascular disease.

There is a connection between your testosterone levels and your cholesterol level and the more you understand this connection, the better prepared you will be to handle it.

First, let’s start with cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood and made by your life. You also get some cholesterol from your diet. Not all cholesterol is bad.

However, when that cholesterol in your blood becomes too high, it can start putting you at risk for developing heart disease. This is why cholesterol screenings are so important. These screenings will help you identify when you have abnormally high cholesterol in your blood and need some intervention. Medication along with lifestyle changes can help with these high cholesterol levels.

These screenings will also help identify your triglyceride levels, which are a type of fat in your blood. High levels of this may contribute to your being overweight or obese.

While more research is still needed on the topic, studies are finding that high cholesterol levels are linked to low testosterone. There are even more studies that suggest testosterone replacement therapies designed to treat low T can be linked to healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Here at LT Men’s Clinic, we know the severity of low testosterone issues. Low T can impact many levels of your health, besides your cholesterol levels and it is a serious issue that should be treated accordingly.
