16 Oct Abdominal Obesity: A Warning Sign of Low Testosterone
A lot of people deal with having a little extra fat around their midsection. This is a common area to store extra fat in both men and women and it can be a notably difficult area to lose weight in. However, a little extra padding around your midsection is one thing, while abdominal obesity is something completely different. If you have a relatively normal body mass, weight and tone in the rest of your body, but have an excess amount of fat around your abdomen, then it can actually be a warning sign for a serious health issue.
One of the most common health conditions associated with serious abdominal obesity is low testosterone, or low T. As the name suggests, low T is a condition where men are not producing enough of the essential hormone testosterone.
Belly fat and testosterone are known to be linked with one another.
As men age, they stop producing as much testosterone as they did when they were younger, which is one of the many reasons that men tend to gain belly fat as they age. This is because body fat has an enzyme in it known as aromatase that turns testosterone into estrogens (another important hormone for men and women).
When someone has a higher amount of estrogen in their body—their hormonal system will tell the body to slow down with their testosterone production levels. This can lead to more belly fat. So, while sometimes low testosterone can lead to excess belly fat, excess belly fat can also impact testosterone levels.
The two go hand in hand.
If you are struggling with one, you may be struggling with the other. This is why you need to make sure that you are getting both issues checked out. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen can help reduce belly fat and ultimately help with testosterone issues, while treating testosterone issues can help with belly fat.
